    Autism and vaccines...never was?
The last time I wrote about autism and vaccines in this blog, I presumed that there was legitimate scientific debate and their relationship. An article in the recent issue of Scientific American shows that the scientific data never actually was: the article that laid the empirical claim for vaccines causing autism was recently retracted.

Impact Factor: Can a Scientific Retraction Change Public Opinion?
The case series report by Andrew Wakefield (then of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Study Group at the Royal Free Hospital in London) and 12 co-authors published February 28, 1998, in the well-regarded U.K. medical journal The Lancet described gastrointestinal problems in children with developmental regression—and suggested a possible link with inoculation of the combination measles–mumps–rubella (MMR) vaccine, which had preceded the symptoms in the children. What appeared, on its surface, to be a descriptive paper about developmental disorders and diarrhea ended up becoming a flash point in the autism community and sparked a decline in childhood vaccination rates—and possibly an uptick in outbreaks of vaccinal diseases.

On February 2, 2010, the editors of The Lancet retracted the paper because the 12 children in the research were not recruited as described by the authors, and the work had apparently not been approved by an ethics committee.

The retraction came as little surprise to many observers of the vaccine–autism debate. Nevertheless, the paper's influence on the broader public may last for awhile, despite a growing body of contrary evidence (as well as many of the co-authors having stepped away from the indications). A survey conducted in 2009, published online March 1, 2010 in Pediatrics, found that about a quarter of the 1,552 parents surveyed thought that vaccines can cause autism in some children. And 12 percent of parents had declined at least one recommended vaccine for their children.

"It's hard to un-ring the bell," says Paul Offit, chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases and director of the Vaccine Education Center at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. "It's very hard to un-scare people once you've scared them."

The point of the article is not that anti-vaccine autism activism is founded on shaky science, but rather that there seems to be an unsettling number of retractions taking place in scientific journals these days. All too often what sticks in people's minds is the bad news that confirms what they want to believe: ecstacy causes brain damage (drug use is immoral), vaccines cause autism (there is a known cause and we can blame the biotech industry).

Nevertheless, it's interesting to me that it took 12 years for the paper to get retracted, which amounts to 12 years of activism--including 12 years of many families opting not to vaccinate children for measles. This points to the seriousness of re-evaluating the system of peer review in our country. On the one hand there is scant professional incentive (or government funding available) to reproduce studies to prove their validity, while on the other scientific studies are increasingly becoming the basis for activism around issues of health and the environment. Our scientific publishing and funding institutions, therefore, may really have a social duty to reconsider the criteria for scientific publication, especially when it comes to such morally charged issues as drug safety and children's health.

Today was spent lighting a TV on fire, then getting the cops /firetruck called on us, (we put the tv out obviously, i guess someone saw the smoke and overreacted. everybody burns shit in the middle of that field type area. theres nothing that could catch fire, yknow?) driving Curtis 4x4 truck into the woods, and then ditching the truck in the woods and escaping until the situation blew over.

We made some pretty close encounters with a cop car that was searching for us. oops.

chileld at Madison's, ate dindins (MAN HIS MOM MAKES GOOD DINNERS.. with stolen tenderloin. Takes so much better cuz it was free), watched Fawlty Towers and Family Guy star wars shit.
After Dustin showed up we went to go explore abandoned house. Found a backpack.

I got accepted into the program! YEAH!
It is 5:09 AM. 5 hours + 1 Monster energy drink of intense moving and i actually got all of my shit outta the trailer park and back to my mom's place... my snakes, rats, mice and my shelf and my tv and recliner are staying with Curtis.
but man, im impressed. kinda glad i never fully unpacked XD

and Chad was asleep, which wokred out perfectly. /awkward LMAO!

Jesus I have a lot of junk.

SO basically im going to get those super thick plastic bags, and those rubbermaid bins, and im going to efficiently store my clothes and my junk in these bins, and store them in my car. i think the moisture wouldnt get to them if the tupperware bins were airtight and the bags were air tight. then im going to stack all my shit very tight in there LIKE SARDINES IN A CAN! and then im going to lastly park my car at my mom's, disconnect the battery, put a car tarp over that shit.. cancel my insurance... get a few hundred bucks back from ICBC (righteous!) and presto. My life will be store in my car for 6 months.
im paying my mom a bunch of money for keeping my shit at ehr place. they are planning on moving within the next few months but curtis will help her move my shit. plus itll be in storage bins so it wont be too hard. ill try to get rid of most of it. its difficult, being a pack rat and all

My hair is getting really white. i try post pics if i can.

Update: March 8th 2010 -v I haD A PRETTy magical weekend. Hung out with Mouse, and drank beer and tuned into the Slurrey Show. Mike was super stoned for it and freestyled along a keyboard drum beat, and his friend Car Bomb playing the guitar. Lost my mind a little bit the day after. Spent majority of my weekend (three days in a row!) with Madison, Curtis, Mike and Valyce! did some mushrooms. and some caps. tripped out abnd watched movies and played videogames. Snuck into a movie! Shutter Island. i cant believe we got away with that. we grab empty large bags and thrown-away large cups and get refills of popcorn and iced tea!

Soooo tired, got some raspberry vodka, sprite, beer, and ordered chinese food and vegged out

anyways Shutter Island is the most mind fuckiest eerie movie ever, i really recommend it. It felt like my mind got raped over 9000 times

had bubble tea and pot stickers (Madison's first bubble tea HAHA.. he had strawberry chocolate) I had pineapple coconut, Curtis had strawberry w00t- , went to an anime/comic book convention thing, a very small one! Curtis bought me this cute lil puppy figurine thing. I love it<3 Mike showed me Dead or Alive at his place; (that bikini scantily clad volleyball (?) game, but it is a hack, it was naked chicks instead of chicks in swim suits, funniest ever. Played Grand theft auto 4

went to go see ALice and Wonderland, it was pretty sweet too. Tried to sneak in but failed. got more free popcorn and iced tea instead. Had a pop corn fight,

Today my Katimavik group fucking phones me! most random phone call ever! they introduced themselves and they all added me to facebook. Im so glad they are so welcoming. Im really stoked to meet them!

im having mroe chinese food, this wekeend was ultimate vegging out weekend holy shit, i gotta stop having so mcuh crap. but its so delicious,
prolly gonna curl up and read a book and take a bath

Madison and I are gonna split a black hair dye box and put random black in our hair, ehehe

i love the album Fasciination by The Faint, i heard it for the first time this weekend and now i cant stop listening!
